Saturday June 7, 2014:

I met Sharon and my two cousins, Steve and Alex at Williams Marina near Ivy Lea in the Thousand Islands Parkway. We all converged at almost the exact same time which is pretty amazing considering that we were all coming from completely different areas…Sharon from Kingston, Steve and Alex by boat from Lyndoch Island and myself from Buck Lake. We all piled into Steve's car at 8:00, crossed the border and drove to Starbucks in Watertown for a coffee before our voyage began.

Sharon had arranged a $55.00 each groupon for us (regularly $74.00) to join the ARO whitewater company on an excursion down the Black River. The four of us were in our own inflatable raft with Chris, our guide, and his two trainees. He was excellent - very personable with a good sense of humour and very informative about rafting and the history of the river.

During our six hour tour, we stopped at a half way point for a pre prepared picnic of a drink and a wrap…and a rest from paddling.

Back on the water we were given the option of jumping out and floating through the rapids. Of course, our little group wanted to experience everything so out we went. Considering it's been a cold summer, the water wasn't all that bad.

We only had one close call when we went over a small falls and then scooted under a rock ledge. Fortunately, Chris yelled at all of us to duck as the ledge was right at head level. The next stop we were all given a can of LaBatt's beer (their sponsor).

At the take out point, we were bussed back to our original location where they had a great chicken barbecue for us, with salads and all the cold LaBatt's beer we could drink. Excellent meal!

Surprisingly, no cousins or friends were harmed during this excursion.
